FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Yusuke is on the shorter side but obviously in the midst of a growth spurt, with a compact, athletic build. (At early canonpoints he is 5'4''/162cm, at mid-canonpoints he is 5'6''/167cm, at late canonpoints he is 5'8''/172cm.) He leans into his delinquent aesthetic by slicking his hair back (with gel or whatever he can get his hands on). When his hair is down, it's long enough to be nearly in his eyes. He likes to experiment with clothes, but also needs to be able to scrap in the street at the drop of a hat, so he'll often dress in layers so that he can discard bulkier ones as needed. He thinks he looks best in green, and it shows.
His rough-and-tumble lifestyle is obvious, even at a glance. He smells like cigarettes and hair products, his clothes are well-loved and torn in places, and he's frequently sporting scrapes and bruises (or bandages to cover them up).
He is boisterous and irreverent, with a tendency to shout when excited. His Japanese VA is Nozomu Sasaki, and his English VA is Justin Cook. They're both great, so take your pick.
PERSONALITY
BACKGROUND
Yusuke was born and raised in Tokyo, the son of teenage parents who split when he was young (at most 3 or 4). From that point forward he was raised solely by his mother, who was 15 when he was born and struggled with addiction issues of her own. With both of his parents largely absent, Yusuke was often left to fend for himself, and began to fall into petty crime as a result. He became a well-known delinquent at his school and in his neighborhood, especially for fighting, shoplifting, and his mother's gang connections. He would skip school for days or weeks at a time, get into turf fights with rival schools, spend entire afternoons drinking or gambling, and was on the whole considered to be a lost cause by almost everyone who knew him— himself included.
Then, when he was fourteen years old, Yusuke jumped out into the street to push a child out of the way of an oncoming car, and was struck instead. Bystanders called emergency services; the child was later cleared with just a couple of bumps and bruises, but Yusuke was pronounced dead at the scene.
The accident sent a shockwave through the community: notorious good-for-nothing Yusuke Urameshi, killed protecting a child he didn't know. No one— from his teachers, to his friends, to his mother— thought he was capable of anything so self-sacrificing. Neither, it turned out, did the underworld staff responsible for processing his soul to the afterlife.
The underworld was so blindsided by Yusuke's death that a place had not yet been prepared for him on the other side. As a result, he was given an offer: undergo an ordeal for his life. If he passed, his soul would be returned to his body and he would be revived; if he failed, he'd be consumed, body and soul.
Yusuke passed his test. (For some definition of "passed", but listen, a win's a win.) He was returned to life, as promised— but the experience had altered and enhanced his existing affinity for the supernatural. Koenma (the son of Great King Enma, Lord of the Spirit World) saw an opportunity: he named Yusuke Spirit Detective, responsible for tracking down and catching wanted (usually demonic) criminals run amok in the material realm.
So, Yusuke still skips a lot of school. But at least now he's got a job!
